MG MGB Technical - MGB Orange County Wiring Shop

Do anybody know of a good electrical shop in Orange County CA? My MGB has all the things powered through the ignition switch off (gas gauge, wipers, heater fan). I would like it fixed, but I don't have the time of ability to run down the problem.

Any ideas??

Frank - I don't know if it is in Orange County, but if not it will be close. Try http://britishautoelectric.com/index.html

I don't understand what you are asking? Cannot help with a shop recommendation. Are you saying the items that are powered through the ignition switch aren't working when the switch is on? If that is your question you may have a blown fuse or a poor connection in the fuse box. It will help if we know the model year of your car.

Hello Frank-

I used to live in Orange County, and a good friend of mine used to do the mechanical work for me on my MGs.

He is no longer there, however I can give you the name of the place:

Britalia
Fullerton, CA

Before going, you may just want to check the main culprit of electrical issues: the fuse box or the connectors to it. If yours is old, I would recommend replacing it anyway, whether it is the problem or not, as it is cheap through Moss.

Shouldn't take more than a couple of minutes to find the fault.
Things you will need;
copy of the wiring diagram (one is available at http://www.advanceautowire.com click on stock schematics.
test light or multimeter.

Turn the car on and use the test light or multimeter to check to see if the terminals of the green wires connected to the fuse box have power. Note your results on the wiring diagram.
If you don't have power, then check the terminals of the white/brown or white wires connected to the fuse box have power. If yes, then the problem is either a bad fuse box or a bad fuse.
Use the wiring diagram as a road map. Be methodical when checking circuits and keep track of your progress. Since there are many things affected, finding the fault should be fairly easy and quick.

What's the problem exactly? What year MGB?
Steve Simmons

Well, I moved, so I am not close to my garage and tools. I had a bad starter. I replaced it. All the electrical out of the ignition switch did not work (Tack, fuel, fan, wipers). I took the switch out, cleaned the connections put it back and it worked. Then I put the radio back and then - it did not work. At this point I got a flat (urrggg). I changed the flat and the electrical worked again. Soooo, I don't know exactly what was wrong, but it is working now.

Sounds like something is intermittent. I'd start wiggling wires until it quits again, before it happens on the road!
Steve Simmons

Sounds like you need a new switch.

Call Josh at Classic Rovers West. They specialize in MG's and Land Rovers. He is very fair and easy to deal with. Their number is 714-899-6000

Frank,
I have had good results with wiring work at Britalia in Fullerton, 714-879-7531.

Steve, If Frank is located in Huntington Beach why not go to a local shop? Haig at Britalia is good, not disputing that fact, he is very good in fact. However, Josh has a mechanic from the UK that is well seasoned with MG and knows the cars inside and out. In my opinion its easier to stay local.
