MG MGB Technical - MGB pillar seals
What is the proper placement of the pillar to body seal? |
William Swain |
Roadster screen? If so it might not seem logical but the apron seal goes over the seal at the base of the upright, as in the attached. If fitted the other way round the legs won't go into the body as far as they need to. ![]() |

So, under the lip and over the crush? |

'Lip' and 'crush' are not terms I'd associate with this area, hence the picture - a thousand words and all that. |

While we’re talking about pillar seals, does anyone know where I can get some decent quality ones? I’ve had a couple of sets from the well known suppliers and they’re rubbish. I fitted a new set a couple of months ago and already one of them is starting to crack at the edges. The last pair I fitted did exactly the same thing. I know there’s lots of talk about poor quality rubber parts and how it’s come about because people want them at rock bottom prices, I’d be willing to pay a reasonable price if I could get quality parts. |

Unfortunately the chances of two or more manufacturers making small-volume parts is pretty slim, I'd have thought. The usual comment is that regardless of price they all get them from the same place! |

The point about "US" wanting rock bottom prices is often heard. My pillar pads have been "patched" many times with Polyerethane sealer. They've been on for 13 years and I don't remember there being a choice then as there isn't now. I don't think it's us not wanting to pay, as much as suppliers wanting to buy rock bottom then sell on with a good profit!! |

As far as I'm aware mine are original and haven't split (yet ...). I didn't replace them 30 years ago when I restored the car unlike a lot of parts most of which just haven't lasted. When I reassembled the V8 a couple of years ago after a repaint the only parts I replaced were the seat covers (worn smooth after 40 years and 220k) and the heater intake that was pitted. The rest is 'patinated'! The new intake fits poorly as the curvature is different to the original and both original and 30 year-old roadster items. Those three all look to be 'original' parts as they have the same manufacturers markings on the back. AFAIK there has only been one part number. |
