MG MGB Technical - MGB radiator identification
Hi, I would like to know whether the ARC82 radiator, which was presumably fitted to all MkII cars (G-HN4), has a central filler neck (in front of the diaphragm) or a swan neck (behind the diaphragm) as the Mk1 ARC260 radiator. Googling did not provide any confirmation, I found MkII pictures with both types (+ custom rads, MkIII rads etc) According to my parts books, pressure cap rating was 7 lbs on the MkI, 10 lbs on the MkII then 13 etc. Thank you very much for your insight ! All the best Gerard 171681G |

The filler cap is in front of the diaphragm. RAY |

Thank you Ray. AD Clausager is in line with you (text and picture), I am just puzzled to see that my 1969 MkII car is fitted with what looks like a MkI radiator (no sign of a replacement but then the car is 42 yr-old !) Any additional comment welcome ! Gerard |

Over the years, owners tend to fit whatever parts are available at the time and for the right price. A PO must have had cooling problems and had access to an earlier design radiator that was in good shape. The only modification needed, to make it work, is to use a thermostat housing from a '62 to '67 engine. This has the coolant exiting the engine to the right side of the car, whereas the '68 and later cars had the coolant exiting the engine to the left side of the engine. This was done to accommodate the air injector pump, that became standard equipment for the NA market, to help the car pass emissions testing. RAY |

Gergard- I have to agree with Ray. The car being in France, a country with high importduties on UK-made goods at the time, the owner probably installed a good used domestically-available radiator to replace a troublesome Original Equipment unit. |

Ray, Stephen, Thank you for your comments. Apologies for indicating ARC instead of ARH in my initial post. I just found the 1971 BL parts list I bought a couple years ago. The radiator part is quite interesting : - ARH260 GHN3/GHD3... to 138400 ((ie all MkI)) - ARH251 : 138401 to 146505 - ARH265 : 146505 on cap filler is GRC106 from 138401 on ((10 lbs cap)) No water elbow part reference number unfortunately (both versions appear on the drawing plate) No mention of an ARH82 radiator. Period pictures of a Continental Europe car would help (no air pump ever fitted here so no absolute need for a modified radiator layout), the only ones I have show a MkI press car Gerard |
