MG MGB Technical - Moss 16 Gallon Fuel Tanks

Moss USA are now offering a new 16 (US) gallon fuel tank for the MGB. Just wondering if anyone here has one installed, and any comments you might have?

Only a gallon different from the original!

Allen,

Yes, those Imperial gallons mate. Depending on year, early cars here in the States were said to be 12 USG, and later cars 14 USG. So just a 2 USG difference for our 1974 B/GT is all. My point was if you were in need of a replacement Moss claim to now have a special coating on the inside (perhaps to better handle E10 unleaded fuel?), better baffling, and a drain plug (missing on earlier replacements) like the we have now.

Still, just curious to know if anyone has installed one?

Lawrence,
As I remember my metalwork lessons, TERNE was a Tin Lead, sometimes Tin Zinc coating. Sounds like they are similar, although slightly bigger, to the Canadian manufactured "plated" replacement tanks available here in the UK. Both my re-builds have them fitted. The only issue i have had is with the soldering of the outlet pipe, which failed on one tank. Since they are made from terne coated steel, they cannot be brazed as they were originally. Perhaps you have to fit the later combined sender and fuel outlet?

Allen,

Thanks for the metalworks lesson. I replaced my original tank about twenty years ago, also sourced from Moss USA. I do not know the materials other than the body and filler neck are steel. The internal coating, or coatings are unknown. My concern is with the E-10 fuel we have here over that time (I'm told) may be eating away at that material. The frequency of (clear plastic) fuel filter changes may be an indicator this is happening?

Lawrence,
Your fuel is particularly harmful to old rubber as used originally for fuel lines and filler necks, unless they have been replaced with J30 spec hose. Not sure of it's affect on Tin or it's alloys.
Allan Reeling

The 1979 MGB (US market) has a 13 U.S. gallon capacity. If you are looking to replace an original tank that is starting to fail (leak), I would consider the 16 U.S. gallon replacement. It is about $30.00 cheaper than the direct smaller tank as advertised in the Moss catalog.

Gary,

Thanks for the comments. I replaced my current tank around 1995, and still in good shape for now. The new 16 gallon has a few good features (like drain plug), but don't think I'd replace my current tank unless it developed a problem.

The other question I have, is there any additional mounting hardware? Perhaps different straps, etc.

Cheers
