MG MGB Technical - need Collapsible spacer
Where can I get a collapsible spacer (crush collar) for the tube type axle differential pinon. Moss part #125-615 is out of stock and there is no expected arrival date. VB and TRF don't even list it. HELP! |

Try checking with a Land Rover parts supplier, many Series I/II/III had similar salisbury diffs. |

If the old one is in good condition, it can be reused with a little lengthening. What I do is, first measure the distance from end to end with a dial caliper. Next, using an anvil or vise, rotate the crush collar while lightly hammering it on the center section for a minute. Re-measure the collar and repeat until it has "grown" by .030". RAY |

In Feburary 2009 I got one from Brown & Gammons. Part # BTB853 The price was 7.95 GBP. It took about 4 weeks to arrive. The web site is www.ukmgparts.com |

Hi If you are really really stuck and can't get one you can put a shim about 10 to 20 though thick in there with the old sleeve and squish it up a bit further. It's sort of naughty but it works OK if you're stuck. Cheers Willy |

I used the trick Willy described two years ago after replacing the oil seal on my GT daily driver. The car is still in use and no problems or oil leaks. Richard. |

I used the shim method on an obsolete Ford unit that no one carried spacers for. I got the correct crush torque and the correct preload using a home-made brass shim about 0.025". No real need to worry about brass corrosion for this sort of application even with hypoid oil. It worked for many years with no problems. |
