MG MGB Technical - new steering rack

has anyone one been successful installing a moss or other steering rack? I am going yo buy one this fall and am wondering what one is best. I know the new ones are greased not oiled and i do not want to rebuild the old one. thanks Doug

The only new racks are made in Argentina and are sold by all of the major suppliers. The RB racks are the same ratio as the earlier CB racks, that is a little bit quicker. Most people have been pleased with their performance, while some have removed shims, from the pinion cover plate, to reduce steering effort. RAY

My Argentinian steering rack made the steering very heavy until I filled it with 90 oil. That made a big difference.

Tore, isn't the rack filled with grease? Did u remove it or modify it to accept the oil? thanks ,Doug

There obviously must have been some grease in it, but it was no problem to get the oil in. I just took off the small clip at the outer end of one of the rubber gaiters, and carefully and very slowly pumped 90 oil in with a small oil can. The oil must have time to flow inside the rack. When is started to come out, I put on the clip again and closed the gaiter. As I said, it made a big difference!

Of course if you use oil in the rack you need to have proper clips on both ends of the gaiters, to keep the oil inside.

Using oil, in these racks, can cause a problem due to there being no connecting oil passage between the two halves of the rack like the original. Oil will tend to stay on one side of the rack, while the other side runs dry. RAY

New racks may be made this way, but this is certainly not the case with my now 11 year old Argentinian made rack. When a workshop changed both rubber gaiters three years ago they did not refill the rack with oil, and the steering was again very heavy. I filled it in the way described above, with instant effect. I could then feel the oil inside both rubber gaiters, both were of course dry when I got the car from the workshop.
