MG MGB Technical - Oil Seal - Engine back plate

Hello,

When I reassembled my engine I couldn't see how the engine back plate seal fitted. I fitted the the rubberised back plate seal (which is a sort of 'U' section), this was the same as I tool off when I dismantled the engine. However on the moss diagram there is a part (LUF10002) which appears to be a 30 mm deep plastic ring (see photo). What concerns me is that this wasn't on the engine when i dismantled it.

Can any explain what this is and how to fit it? is it necessary?

Many thanks,

Hi Alex

It is just a drawing of the rear crank oil seal you have already fitted.

That is the installer that goes over the end of the crankshaft to guide the backplate into place without damaging the seal.

Iain,

Do you have a supplier/part number for this?

To my knowledge, and at least in the US, it does not come with the seal regardless of where it is obtained. It would certainly make that task easier and more accurate.

Thanks

As far as I know there is no separate part number as it supplied along with the seal.

Hi Iain

I think you are wrong the part number refers to the rear plate oil seal on the diagram not the two part seal and plastic component to ease the fitment

LUF10002 OIL SEAL, back plate
Note: OE Manufactured

....I have some of the two part ones at work and will post the number tomorrow. They are the Factory Black seal and fitting sleeve.

Hi Iain

You are right about the part number. Moss lists it incorrectly as just an oil seal and they have not altered the reference drawing to suit. I attach a pic of LUF 10002 with a Viton seal.

This is the rear oil seal we use it is black Viton and designated AHU2242Z.

This is the silicone rear oil seal shown in the Moss Drawing. 13H2457Z.
