MG MGB Technical - oil/temp gauge questions

Can anyone tell me if there should be a small fibre washer in the joint between the copper oil pipe and the gauge. Also has anyone any pics of how the temperature sender pipe routes through the engine bay. 1968 'B roadster.
Steve Church

Leather, part No. 2K 4936. FWIW most seem to come up through the firewall, have several turns of 'spare', then run alongside the block under the heater valve and turn straight into the head. I have a clip utilising the rear dynamo mounting tapping in the block as I didn't want vibrations acting where it turned into the bulb. My mid-70s original brochure only shows the carb side of the engine, unfortunately.

Thanks for that.Do I need any thread sealant for the temperature sender or is it meant to screw in dry?
Steve Church

I used some plumbers ptfe tape on the screw thread.

Steve-
The capillary pipe should exit the head fitting with a P turn about 2 inches in diameter in order to route it back towards the head where it follows the head gasket line to the number plate, whereupon it dips down under the plate boss and runs level back underneath the heater valve where it is clipped to a small plate that is secured under the lower bolt of the heater valve. It then runs straight back from there into a movement-absorbing coil approximately 4” (100 mm) in diameter before running across the firewall (bulkhead) shelf and being fixed by a P clip before going through the grommet on the shelf. There is a further P clip on the inside of the firewall (bulkhead).

Thanks for the detailed description Steve. I wondered what that little bracket was when I replaced the heater valve. Guess I'd better put it back on. I wonder where it went?
Steve Church

The "spare" turns allow for flex as the engine moves on its mounts

Steve-
Where did it go? I'm convinced that in every MG owner's garage there is a portal for a space/time warp that enters the Parallel Universe of Lost Parts.
Stephen Strange

Personally I have mine under the heater valve to keep it away from the plugs.
