MG MGB Technical - Overdrive Part 2

I want to replace the O rings on the oil pump, solenoid and relief valve on my 1975 bgt. I have removed the solenoid but it seems to be in one piece whereas I thought the plunger and steel ball etc were removable. I do not want to force anything and would appreciate advice on how to strip it.

Secondly I cannot move the oil pump plug. I have tried using long nosed pliers to fit into the two holes but it won't budge. Again advice on how to remove it appreciated.

You'll probably need to fabricate something like the factory tool as attached. Hardened steel 'pins' in a mild-steel plate should do it I'd have thought.

A handy basis for that tool is a large bolt head (K series crankshaft nut is ideal). Trim off the head, drill holes for the pins (cut them off a suitable sized pin punch if you don't have easy access to the right grade of steel) and it's ready. turn the tool courtesy the right sized socket on the original bolt head hex.

BTW for the oil pump the main thing you need to focus on is cleaning thoroughly and re-seating the non-return ball. As per manual, a good sharp tap.

For making this tool,a couple of roll pins make good legs for this,

Rod, fortunately I've not had to remove the overdrive pump on my car, but further to the advice already given, here are a couple of ideas.

1. Put 2 phillips screwdrivers (or punches) in the holes, hold them in place with one hand and use another screwdriver between the two to move and undo the plug.

2. You can buy adjustable pin wrenches - here are a couple of examples:
