MG MGB Technical - Overdrive sump - snapped screw

Whilst trying to stop a gearbox oil leak, I've accidentally snapped one of the screws holding the overdrive sump plate on.

Does anybody have any suggestions as to the best way to remove the screw? I'm unsure if there's any part of the screw still protruding out of the overdrive as I've left the sump plate on.

Is it necessary to drain the gearbox oil before removing the sump plate?

Thanks in advance,

You will want to drain the OD transmission first and even then you will need to put a catch tray under the OD as there will still be oil in the OD unit that will come out once you remove the cover. Not sure how you will have to go about getting the old screw out as that would depend upon where it broke, what tools you have and how much experience you have doing this type of work. You might want to take it to a specialist to have the screw removed. I would suggest that you pick up a new filter gasket prior to removal though as from your description it will need replacement (and a new bolt). Good luck.

If it snapped on tightening then unless it distorted the threads in the process the stub should be relatively easy to remove in-situ, possibly just by tapping with a hammer and pick round the edge. Failing that this is the sort of situation where an EeziOut should work. Bolts that snap on *removal* due to corrosion are a different kettle of fish, and is where EeziOuts have been known to snap off as well making things even worse.

Thanks for the suggestions.
It snapped on tightening. I'll drain the gearbox this weekend and remove the plate - hopefully there will be a little bit still protruding that I can use to start it moving.

Don't forget, you are tightening a steel screw, through a thin plate, into aluminium threads.

Its a fine balance to get the appropriate degree of bite to seal the plate against the gasket without distortion or risk of stripping the threads in the aluminium. Perhaps better less than more as you can always go back under to tweak if there are minor leaks. Don't forget the little rubber block gasket for the solonoid wire where it comes through the plate.

I think I was very lucky this time! After draining the gearbox and removing the overdrive sump, I could remove what was left of the screw with my fingers.

I was very careful tightening the new screws up!

You were very lucky. Thanks for getting back to us. Always great when jobs like this go well....not usually too tough but always a little messy.

Just went through the same job but it was to get the OD to work as the pump wasn't working. I am ready for the road now although it might wait until after Christmas.

Safety Fast!

Ah, worth a try then. I'm just a simple soul, it's always worth trying the simple things first.
