MG MGB Technical - Overdrive What is this then??
Just drained oil on overdrive to find these bits in the sump!!! I guess it is the thrust washer? How easy is it to get the O/D off the box in situ? And is it a straight forward job to put a new washer in? Thanks Colin ![]() |

If you found that coin in the sump, I'd shake the transmission good and hard to see if there is any more money in there ;-) Cheers - Dave |

Said to be impossible to remove the *gearbox* on it's own on OD boxes. *Might* be possible by lifting the engine off its mounts and pulling it forwards then tilting the gearbox down, but whether it is worth it is another matter. |

Time to pull the engine, trans and overdrive as a unit. Sorry. RAY |

Yes, the thrust washer, and as Ray says, it involves disassembly of the OD unit to replace. Been there before! ~Dave |

You'll need a roof-mounted hoist or a pretty beefy lift to remove the two as a unit, with a tilt control, and raising the rear of the car at least as much as the front. The one I got could only just reach the engine on full extent, and even then only from the side. As you will almost certainly split them to replace the clutch (unless almost new) I'd certainly find it easier to remove them separately. |

You may be able to remove the OD unit in place but you will never get the internal units aligned well enough to reinstall. I did it once on an XK 140 but will never do it again. Sandy |
