MG MGB Technical - Paints
Hi I wish to paint my 74.5 MGB in it's original colour, Blaze red BLVC16. But I would like to paint it in a 2 part paint or base coat/clear coat. Does any one know where I can get the paint codes which match our enamel painted British cars, but in base coast/clear coat. My local store isn't much help and the manufactures tech support keeps referring me back to the acrylic enamel codes. Thanks Bruce |

Bruce - Google - mg paint codes. You get a whole lot of info. lots of things we can't buy in Europe as of 2008 - various paints - disolventes etc a no no. I just looked up ICI codes for my A, B, and Magnette - to stock up for the future. Regards Brian |

Find a auto paint supply store that handles Dupont or PPG/Ditzler. Give them the paint code from the car or those lsited in the Moss catalog, they should have no trouble making you the correct color. |

Copying from Paul Tegler's web site http://www.teglerizer.com/home.html you get this for Blaze Red: BMC / BL BLVC16 Ault & Wiborg AWBG 28665, 30545 ICI 7864 PPG / Ditzler 60637 Dupont 30007 Glasso / Rinshed Mason RM 6654, BM 162 |

My local paint supply shop guy (Dupont) kept telling me he couldn't even probably mix enamel, until I made him put a code in the computer.... an he was wrong, he could even mix it in base/clear. The guy at the local PPG supply wasn't much help either, even though the PPG website shows current codes for some colors back to 1950. Sometime the problem is the guy behind the counter. |

Dear Bruce, Something else to consider besides the correct code is how "hard" the paint will be when dry. An MG's body flexes quite abit, as we all know. Therefore you may want to consider using a "softer" paint to avoid cracking. A "hard" or brittle paint will easily crack at high stress points and weld seams whereas a "soft" paint will be more forgiving. There is, however, a trade-off as "hard" paint is more scratch resistant. Chris |

The problem seems to be that I want an acrylic enamel colour in base coast clear coat and there doesn't seem to be any type of cross referencing. Am I in fact just going to have to go through colour chips until I find one close to the original colour? I would have though with the original paint numbers they could have cross referenced the colour and mixed it up in base/clear? Bruce |

Bruce, I own and operate All British Car Repair (Hi-Tech Collision Repair) in St. Louis, Missouri. I always use DuPont Chromabase, base coat clear coat (bc/cc)system. PPG, BASF, etc are also very good products but, I'm not sure of their procedures. I'm not sure why you want to use an acrylic enamel and base coat clear coat (bc/cc). The new acrylic urethanes are far superior to enamels and much easier to repair when damaged. The reasons why the suppliers cannot mix some of the original colors in more modern paints is a whole other story. I'll try to explain how I go about matching original colors with the newer DuPont bc/cc systems. If you have a spot of original color (about 4"x4") on a flat surface, you should be able to go to your DuPont supplier and have him use his Chroma-Vision scanner to match the color and mix a bc/cc acrylic urethane color. If you don't have a spot on your car to use, I usually give then the MG color code and have a small amount of acrylic enamel (Centari) mixed. I then spray this color on a test panel and have it scanned to come up with the modern color. This is how I always match original colors and it works great. If you have any questions, please feel free to call 314-426-1600 or e-mail mgdoc@sbcglobal.net. Good luck, John (the MGDoc) |

Bruce, have the Dupont supplier plug your color code into his computer for Dupont's Nason brand. I have had no problem getting modern urathane paint in the correct color. It seems the manufactures don't cross the colors into all their brands. The mineral blue that poped right up in Nason was not available in Dupont Centari enamel. |

Thanks Guys I apologies if I wasn't explaining myself very well. My car is currently acrylic enamel and I am repainting. The guy who is repainting my car wants to use a bc/cc system. I took the paint codes to my local parts store and inquired to availability of a bc/cc product in my original colour. I suppled the parts store with the acrylic enamel paint codes for my color thinking that should be all they needed to get me the exact same color in a bc/cc. They told me the color wasn't available in a bc/cc syste and the only way to get a close match was to pick the closest match from their color chips. I have received a response from TCP Global and they said "We will have to reformulate this color for you in base/clear which is no big deal." I am nut sure about having this type of product shipped internationally though. Back to local problem. I guess the best thing to do is to by pass my local store and deal with the manufacture directly. I can easily supply them with the paint codes or spray a small piece of metal to be scanned as I have some acrylic enamel I use for touch ups. Thanks All Bruce |

Bruce, before you start shipping paint across borders see if you can find a different local auto paint supply house that is willing to lift a finger to help you. If your local supplier is a parts house that just happens to also sell paint they may not really know much about it. The folks at my local paint supplier have always been extreamly helpfull not only in getting the right mix codes, but also suppling information on what works with what and how not to screw up a paint job. |

Bruce, If you take a small piece from your car with the color you want, or a paint color sample to Pacific Endura - 12194 86 Ave Surrey BC Tel 604-591-8224, they will match your sample, probably same day, in 2K acrylic urethane. You can clear coat if you wish but the urethane itself will have an excellent gloss. Cheers, Bob. |

Hello, A basic question: Which paint is the right choice for your B? I sprayed my B-GT 5 years ago with S-W western acrylic enamel with addition of a hardener in it. Results: easy to do a great job, but the drawback is a compound a year+ wax. But I notice that with such an prehistorical finish, they sell a clear for it. I should have used it... Some friends are BC-CC addict and some others are urethane fans. But often the discussion is that MGs were never so plastics alike in those days. What are your opinions? Is there a site discussing the pro @ con. Cheers, JGC |

Bob Thanks very much for the address and phone number. I am up on the Sunshine Coast but I can get a sample to them or drop by and see them on one of infrequent trips to the big city. Bruce |

A few years ago I painted the engine compartment of my 74 which is Blaze Red. It was repainted before I bought it and the newer color is more orange. I can tell a lot of difference in the door jams and places where the prep wasn't good and the new paint peeled off. I used the BLVC16 and the guy at the local NAPA parts mixed it in Martin Seynour paint. Their computer showed a version of orange for an Austin Healey. When I finally got it sprayed, the NAPA paint was the same as the newer paint, more orange than the original. Some day I want to do an entire repaint and I'll have it custom mixed so it will be the exact original color. When you compare the original paint with the BLVC16, at least on my car, the Blaze Red really is red, not orange. The trunk, under the hood (bonnet) and battery area are still the original paint, and they're red, not orange. I realize those places don't get sunlight and won't be faded like the outside. Apparently whoever repainted it didn't sand very good around the windshield wipers, because the orange is peeling and you can definitely see that the original Blaze Red is darker and redder. I shot this picture with my digital Canon Rebel (6.1 megapixel) on the RAW setting to get the correct color, then I reduced the image in Photoshop so it would transfer over the internet. This picture will show the difference between BLVC16 and the original Blaze Red. My recommendation would be to take the top off and battery cover off and find a 4x4inch patch around battery trays and use that Chroma-vision scanner. thanks, Ken ![]() |

If your local supplier is a Dupont place give him paint code 30007, and make him input it even if he doesn't think it will come up with anything, you both might be suprised. My guy said he couldn't come up with ANYTHING, gave him code 30015 (black tulip) the other day, and it came up. and that's a more obscure color. |
