When my rheostat went intermittent I shorted it out as a short term fix. The result was that the dials were legible at night for the first time since I had the car so I left it like that. Others have fitted LED lights and painted the inside of the cases white to brighten things up a bit |

Hi, The panels lights are dim to start with, the rheostat just makes them dimmer. herb |

I have also 'shorted' the rheostat. The lights did not work so I stripped it down and on reassembly it sort of worked so I shorted it. The oil pressure gauge is very dim (Side lit) but the others are fine (ish). Indicator (Green) lights are NOT connected to the rheostat but are direct from the indicator switch. so if they are also dim (Mine are similar brightness to the instruments) then maybe you need to look to the supply side but as they are from different fuses I would think that unlikely. VERY good wiring diagrams here: www.advanceautowire.com/mgb.pdf Also some discussion on other bulbs can be found here: http://www.mgb-stuff.org.uk/electricstext2.htm#led |

Apart from Herbs mod (http://www.mgb-stuff.org.uk/saga22one.htm snd scroll down) I've not found anything that gives worthwhile increase that doesn't melt the innards or cost a fortune. As far as the indicator repeaters go unless the corners of the car are dim as well (in which case they wouldn't flash with the original style of flasher unit, or flash fast with an after-market type) it won't be the voltage supply i.e. from the flasher unit, but could be either of the connections to the bulbs themselves including the earths of course. It could well be that the dash was resprayed with the green filters in-situ. I don't know if mine was, but the filters were certainly black on that side, rubbing them on fine wet and dry back to green did improve them. |

Thanks Guys I'll have a look at the green filters Paul, you might be onto something there. Cheers Jack. |
