MG MGB Technical - Quarter light window repairs

Hello, first post. I am painting my 1965 MGB and have struck a problem . Both quarter light windows have a small L shaped bracket mounted at the back joining the long channel that goes into the door with the lower bracket of the quarter light, if that makes sense. Both brackets are broken and the quarter lights were very wobbly. I can't find any listing for replacements. The part that mounts to the lower bracket of the quarter light holds the threaded shaft which, in my manual, is attached to the rear stud plate.

You can see in the photo below the bracket on the long channel and the threaded shaft coming from the lower bracket of the quarter light. Has anyone seen this before? It just occurred to me that this may be a later, home made alteration.

Thanks for any help that you can give me.
Gary in Tasmania.

I think it's original, for strengthening. Scuttle-shake might have fractured them if the quarter-lights weren't set to the screen uprights correctly, or maybe repeatedly pulling the door closed with the top of the quarter-light. Short of replacing the whole thing I think you are going to have to drill the rivets out and fabricate a replacement angle-piece.

Paul,

thanks, it was a very poor bit of design(it only lasted 47 years) with strain being taken by the piece with the drill hole in it. I think that I can make a stronger bit, i just need to work out how thick it can be before it fouls something. I'm a bit nervous about fiddling with the body as the paint is only 36 hours old.

See how I go. Do you want to know about the outcome?

Always. The final outcome of all posted queries will prove useful to others who are tackling the same, or similar tasks. RAY

Hi Gary
Mine had a broken bracket - I fashioned a new one from some scrap steel and it worked well.

here's the broken bit

....and the new part

Sorry I don't have measurements - I just made it to fit . I threaded the middle hole so I could install a new scree (actually a hex head screw with the head ground down to fit in the channel of the frame.

Cheers
