MG MGB Technical - Quieting a New Exhaust System
Finally replaced the exhaust system (old one had a hole in the muffler, and was VERY old). Replacement is a standard setup for the '73 from Moss. Was surprised that it is still quite noisy. Is there a way to quiet the system down? Wrap for the muffler/resonator? Thanks for any info/recommendations, Pat '73 BGT |

I don't know if this is possible. I had a custom system made for my MGB V8, and I thought it was too loud. The exhaust guys put perforated inserts into the tailpipes from outside and tack welded them in place. The job was done while I waited and the result is remarkable. It has lost the hard deep bark that was so wearing on the motorway. Go and speak to an outfit that actually makes exhaust systems is my advice. |

I'm leaning toward the earplugs (cheaper solution), but I'll check around for exhaust specialty shops. I had heard at one point that the standard systems might use thin-gauge metal that might resonate, but I'm not in the market for yet another replacement (yet). Pat |

I managed to make my nearly new exhaust system a lot louder yesterday, I clouted a raised drain cover and although there's no splits and the joints all survived undamaged the centre baffle is damaged an vibrates loudly. So it's off to Bell silencers in Swindon today for them to fit a centre cherry bomb. The last two systems I've had with larger centre boxes have both quickly suffered the same fate, so I'll stick to a cherry bomb for the extra ground clearance, quieter systems hang too low on a CB car. To me the extra noise is a bonus. >:) |

Mike, You may be right about the extra noise being a bonus - people in "land-cruisers" just don't respect a small car visually - but a loud car gets some notice. Guess I'll just have to figure out how to listen to the radio another way. Pat |

Well I got my new cherry bomb fitted today and wow what a difference. The car sounds fantastic, it's got a lovely throaty roar now! It's so good in fact I decided upon a run around the Cotswolds, I'm still smiling after nearly 350 MGB miles today. I'm actually pleased I broke the old one now! Absolutely top-notch service from the guys at Bell Silencers in Swindon UK. I can thoroughly recommend their stainless exhaust systems and their excellent fitting service. Mine is now equivalent to their sports system. Of course no trip to the Cotswolds would be complete without a trip to the spiritual home of MG. Unfortunately no one was at home at no 12 Cemetery Road today. ![]() |
