MG MGB Technical - Rear Axle Breather

Hi Guys,

I am refurbishing the rear suspension area of the car & have bought a new axle breather. How do i remove the old one as it appears to simply spin round when i turn the cap? Do i pull off the cap & then grip what i perceive to be the plastic stem & unscrew it? (I assume the plastic cap on the original is just spinning on the plastic whereas the new one appears to be held in position by lugs (2nd pic)). I don't want to end up with the original breaking off and / or dropping into the axle).

Cheers

Charles

Charles, you have worked it out - the stem unscrews and can't fall into the arm centre. Two observations, do you need to replace it or should you keep the replacement for the time some ham-fisted spanner-jockey breaks it off ? it's Christmas - you ought to be with friends and family ..... if only on zoom !
Merry Christmas -

The cap does pull off, revealing a hole into which you can insert a small screwdriver, or similar, to use as a lever.

Thanks Dave & Roger!

A Happy Christmas to you both.

(Roger the car is tucked away now for a couple of days - not just because it's Christmas , but freezing outside, never mind the garage)!

Cheers

I for got that I had a photo on file of a (not very clean) breather.

It shouldn't need replacing unless it's broken. They clean up well with a bit of paraffin.

Thaanks Dave!

Hi Dave & Roger,
The original breather came out very easily.
It was nearly as dirty as Dave's.
It has cleaned up well - i used Meths as i haven't got any paraffin.
I have attached a photo showing the different heights of the original + the new replacement . The threads are the same but the new one is considerably taller with a fixed head , a stepped body & perhaps less ventilation.
As suggested , i am going to put the original back in which seems far less vulnerable.
Cheers,
Charles
