MG MGB Technical - Rear axle width
Remember something about differences between wire and disk axles. One is wider that the other??? Is there an easy way to tell them apart? B is a 68 Thanks Tom

Wire wheel axle housings are 2" narrower than steel wheel housings.

Any idea what the measurements would be and where you take them?

Steel is 48 1/2 at the point where the backing plates bolt on; 46 3/4 between the innermost face of the backing plates near the outer edge on the flat face - easiest to measure. Wire wheel ones are 1 1/2 less. FRM

Related question. I'm running Superlite 14X6 bolt-on wheels on my '73 B/GT. While it's a rare occurance (because I drive a bit conservatively most of the time), a hard, fast, left turn (particularly when I have a passenger) will cause a bit of rubbing on the LH outer lip. I don't want to bend the lip on this recently-painted car - for fear of messing up the paint, but I've been advised to use a wire wheel rear axle (retaining the bolt-on hubs) to move the rear wheels in 3/4" on each side. Good idea or bad? I have a spare ww tube ax rear end. Thanks, Allen

Check clearances on the inside - it is not much more than the outside. The WW axle will move the wheel inward 3/4" per side, then one or both sides will no doubt rub on the inner. The perpetual puzzle of the axle offsets and which way it goes on which car is insoluble in normal fluids, but enough beer can do it. Offset lower mountings or changing springs, moving the axle on the mounts, and other hard work might do it, but be prepared to drown your sorrows. FRM

Allen some people have solved the problem with a wire wheel axle and then used wheel spacers to move the wheel out a little for clearance. The spacers are available at many wheel and tire shops. You would probably have to install longer lug bolts. Clifton

Hey - these sound like some good ideas. Thanks, guys! Allen

I rolled the lips on my GT. That solved the rubbing problem. I was running 14x6" Cromadoras-Lovely wheels. Rich

Allen- Fit a Panhard Rod to limit axle sway. Improves rear wheel tracking for more precise, more responsive handling, too.
