MG MGB Technical - rear break assembly, links
I am, finally, reassembling my rear break shoes. the linkage bar for the hand break cable, there is left and right. I was looking at them and thought how do I know which goes to which side? Maybe it will be clear when I go to put them together. If someone has a clue before hand it would be appreciated. |

They are different as I recall. Did a complete job on my 80 and remember scratching my head a little when looking them over. As I best recall, the Haynes manual has a photo, but took a moment to study it and determine if I was looking at the driver or passenger side. Can't recall everything from memory, but a good pic from the Haynes manual and perhaps some from the web that identify which side of the car the photo is taken from should get it correct. |

Thank you for the reply. I did forget to mention this is a 1965, banjo axle car. Not many Haynes manuals for that car around. Most pictures I see in catalogs just show one side view and not so straight forward when you look at the off side assembly. |

I have access to the original BMC dealers parts book and they are listed as 2 different parts. From the pictures, the arm that protrudes from the lever pivots underneath the lever on the right as well as the left side. I'll include a picture. This is for a banjo axle. The part numbers are the same for the banjo and the tube style axle. RAY

Here's a picture of both sides of the tube axle. The part numbers are the same as for the banjo axle levers. RAY

Ray, A picture speaks a 1000 words! Shows the L shaped lever resting on top of the long bar. Just what I wanted to know. Thank you. GEOFF |

Geoff, You're quite welcome. It gave me a reason to use my dusty old scanner. RAY |

Ray & Rick, I finally was able to find time to tackle this job. If there ever was a job that needed three hands this is it. The thing that puzzled me was that neither of the two old manuals I have mentioned or even showed in the picture the hand break lever return spring. I think it said "assemble in reverse order" or something like that. It was a challange holding all three springs in place at the same time and get the lever out the hole in the backing plate. I had to pound things into place. I don't remember having this much trouble with the '69 B breaks, I should take the wheel of that car and see if things look right. Cheers. |
