MG MGB Technical - Rear wheel arch replacement (not wing)

Hi everyone, me again on my GT restoration. I've almost finished the sills and im now looking at the rear wheel arch (outer of the inner). I haven't welded up the sills to the arch as I want to replace it but I've not seen anything in the archives or on google to show me how best to achieve this. Has anyone got any advice? I can see some spot welds so I assume its in two pieces and the outer separates from the inner?

Yes, two halves.

Not done it but I can imagine there will be a lot of fettling to do. If the outer wing is off, or in any case really, you could probably do with the axle on the car and the wheels with tyres on the axle to get the right spacing from the outer wall of the tyre to the lip round the arch on the wing. Particularly important with a CB or lowered car, a narrower clearance on the near side is so common even before restoration. You wouldn't want to reduce it any further, and it is difficult to know where else to take measurements from as it has never been fully established just where the discrepancy arises.

The outer arch is over the inner, so it should be relatively easy to separate the two. Plenty of spot welds, though.

Fortunately, I just had to de-rust and paint mine.

This is what it looks like with the rear outer removed. Hope it helps.

The fit of the inner and outer was a little out of line, with the inner showing below the outer at the rear edge. It took a lot of fettling to get it to look right.

Thanks everyone, those images are a big help. Ive got the outer wing off at the mo, and the sills are almost done. The wing is only cut up to the chrome strip so hopefully itll still be ok to remove and replace the outer of the inner wing.

I've done it twice. My advice is not to weld the new wheel arch in place until you have fettled & dry fitted the outer wing & got it clamped or screwed in place on the car & are happy with the fit. Only when that is done should you fettle, fit & weld the outer arch on. Otherwise you run the risk of the rear wing not fitting the arch flange properly.
