MG MGB Technical - rear wheel bearings

I have the back axle out of the roadster to do fit the anti clunk kit, and oil seals. I was thinking about fitting new wheel bearings while the half shafts are pulled. There is no noise from them and considering the quality of some of the replacement parts am I better to leave them alone. Your comments would be welcome.

Trevor- It depends. What is mileage? I replaced a set on a 78 at 88k miles a while back because it seemed like an "oh well, since I'm here" kinda thing and was impressed with how excellent the old bearings were: absolutely tight and true. FWIW, I ended up using a second side thrust washer on the driver side of the spiders and the old copper cap on top of the new one to really tighten things up. Remember, the shaft flat faces left from the rear. Good Luck. Vem

Unless they are noisy, or you have access to a press, leave them alone. They are a buggah to get off and back on, requiring access to freezer and oven, with what that entails with a typical 'er indoors :o)

Thanks for the comments, Vem, I have no idea what the milage is. There is 60,00 on the clock but i do not think for one minute that, that is all it has done.
Paul I think you are right and I have decided to leave alone. The anti clunk kit is in and the outer oil seals. Its all ready to clean the crud off and a fresh coat of paint.

In my experience these don't suffer catastrophic failure. They start to get noisy and can be that way for quite a long time. The same is not true of a truly noisy input pinion bearing.

I'd leave them "as is".

Don't touch them! RAY
