MG MGB Technical - Rear Wheel Cyclinder differences
Aside from price, what is the difference between the two .800 rear wheel cylinders offered by Moss? Any reason to avoid the cheaper version? |

Andy. One of supposed to be made by whomever now owns the name of the original equipment manufacturer while the other one does not make such a claim. I have used both the OEM and the aftermarket wheel cylinders and have not noted any significant difference between either their quality or performance. I purchase the aftermarket versions from my local BAP store at a savings over the price charged by the MG specialty retailers. Les |

Les, Unfortunately I'm a long drive away from the BAP stores :-). How much do they charge for the parts? |

Andy, I recently bought non-OEM rear wheel cylinders for my BGT and the quality was fine, but the bleed screws were metric and now I have to remember this when I service my brakes on this car. Not safety related, but annoying to have metric parts where they do not belong. Cliff |

If you want to compare prices, look at the websites of all your local chain auto parts stores. |

Andy, I just bought rear wheel cylinders from NAPA...cheaper than Moss and good quality...made in Italy of all places! |

Amusing related story. Not long ago, I found an Irish supplier for the wheel cylinders needed for my Farina Mk IV Magnette. The cylinders came from Ireland; the brand name was Delphi, Troy Michigan. That's right - these were made 119 miles from my house here in Michigan! More relevant to the point: since MGB wheel cylinders cannot be rebuilt, new ones are always in order, and I'm not too fussy about the brand names. I've bought "Brand X" ones from all kinds of suppliers and they've always been fine. BTW, even the Delphi (Lockheed) replacements have metric bleeders. But I always replace these with Speed Bleeders anyway. Note that Advance Auto is a good source for rebuilt calipers when you need them. The last ones I bought were about $40 "packed" (with pads) exchange, guaranteed for life to the purchaser. FWIW, Allen |

Bob, Thanks for the info - odd, I was parked next to a NAPA pickup at the convenience store today and thought about checking them out for parts! Get home and here's the part number. $24.49 according to their site. I read many years ago that wheel bearings for Jags were made in the US, shipped to the UK, packaged and returned as factory parts - with a hefty price markup. Cheers |
