MG MGB Technical - Rear wing joint

Hi,
Can anyone tell me if once the rear wing is installed is it welded to the panel shown in the attached picture? As on my car it wasn't, just filled with seam sealer.

Cheers

It is not welded, use sealer to keep the water out of the boot.

Originally a strip of closed cell foam was a push fit here, I just used sealer as the foam was not re usable after 30 years.

I didn't see the closed cell foam, but both sides were the same with a seam sealer that was much more putty like than the seam sealer found at back of front wings at cowl or at many other seam sealed joints on the car. This leads to another question- where doglegs, and bottom of B posts meet outer sill panel, what was there originally? I.E. Some seam sealer, or open to the elements? Obviously this is a point where the body would flex a bit? Also does anyone have a suggestion on how to get a rolled over edge at bottom of B post, without buying an expensive tool? The dogleg patch has it, the B post lower patch panel doesn't. Please any comments would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Not open to the elements, but whether it was covered with seam sealer then paint, or just paint, is a moot point. It certainly wasn't a flush joint, so probably just a close-fitting butt joint closed with paint. It *shouldn't* flex, and doesn't in my experience even with repair panels, as the paint would crack there and mine hasn't.

Not sure what you mean by the rolled edge or where you mean, since the bottom of the dog-leg repair panel goes to the bottom of the sill whereas the bottom of the B-post goes to the top of the sill.

Are you talking about where the B post repair panel joins to the rear wing lower repair panel. ie the bits you need to replace after repairing the sills?

If so I asked the Owners Club Spares about the "missing" return flange that should allow the two to be welded together. They confirmed it is not there.

I fabricated a narrow (25mm) strip bent at right angles and snipped every so often on one flange so that it could be bent into the required curve. This was plug welded to the B-post repair panel and then to the wing repair panel when that was fitted over the top. The resulting rather poor finish in the "V" was then lead loaded to give a smooth result.

The bottom of original b-post had a folded over edge, and a 1.5 x 2.5" metal plate under it where it "rests" on top of the outer sill. I would like to reproduce this edge without mangling the b-post patch.

I think I know what you mean, and I didn't notice that problem yet , but I have only briefly put dogleg, and b-post patch in place to see how they are going to fit.( yes, the bits to replace after sills, which are done, except for a few more plug welds)

Paul (PAH),

I had a similar problem. My B-posts were fine but had lost the folded edges around the bottom in a previous repair. I fabricated small patches which I folded to 90 deg, plugged and seam-welded them to the post and plugged to the sill. Quite neat, strong and hardly noticeable.

I'm getting confused, let's backup and clarify one thing. Would you agree that the btm. of the b-post, and front of dogleg were originally not welded to the outer sill except at the points where these panels meet the btm. and top where they all are spot welded together and will be plug welded together?
Thanks

Sorry Paul,my last note was utter rubbish. I had just been finishing the A-post repair on my car and went off at a complete tangent to our B post discussion! Must keep taking the pills!

Thanks for the info on the missing return flange, I now see what you mean.
