MG MGB Technical - Removing headrest from seat back

Is there a way to remove the headrest from a '73BGT seat back in order to replace or fit a new cover? Does it require a special tool?
I believe there are small pins/wedges that retract when the headrest is inserted into the frame, and then extend when in position - but have not been able to reverse the process.
Thanks for any info,
Pat

Funnily enough I've just removed mine five minutes ago Pat. All it needs is a good firm tug upwards, it helps if you have a Webasto roof in a GT or you could recline tham back and pull from the rear of the car. It feels like they might not come free, but with the right amount of effort they will come off.

So far it's two off and one recovered for me.

Recently had the same problem with my '70 roadster. The head rest seemed to be stuck in the up position and wouldn't go up or down. Finally, a good hard tug, both up and forward, did the trick. I cleaned it up real good after getting it out. As stated, it will come loose.

Mike and Dennis,
Thanks - I'll give it a try.

There should be a spring-clip and a stop to allow the head restraint to stay in any position but not be pulled out easily. There should be a way of sliding some flat strip down the face of the tub to get under the clip and lift it over the top, but you'd need to see one apart to work out what to do. I simply put a jack in the car behind the seat with a piece of timber between jack and the bottom of the restraint and jacked it out. Didn't bother refitting the clip, so it just lifts out now, which I needed to do when I had a tonneau cover without pockets. Doesn't stay in position either, but I always had it fully lowered anyway.

Yep, Paul is right. I left the clips out of mine (couldn't figure out how they went anyway). It takes a good pull but they will just come out. I also have a tonneau cover without the head rest pockets!
