MG MGB Technical - replacing speed gauge
I need to replace my speedom gauge. It reads 10 miles to slow hince 70 when reading 60 ...dont know why.... '72 model w/out OD - will all the other model gauges work, or NOT.can some one give some info on this? thanks Bart |

On my 65 the turns/mile are on the face of the speedo. You'll want one with the same figure assuming the old one was correct. Check the archives about this for general guidelines. Mine reads 5-10 mph high and I've just learned to live with it. You could send it to Nosinger for rework if you want. There is some information on the internet about British speedos including repairs and recalibrations. I decided not to do that for now. Hopefully you can find a good used one. |

Apart from Germany which required 'accurate' speedos they all read up to 10% fast but should never had read slow. The correct speedo for a 72 is 1280tpm, OD or non-OD. It was only the 3-synch cars that had different speedos for OD and non-OD (1020 to 1060). With rubber bumpers it changed to 1000tpm because the OD speedo drive gearing changed. If the odometer is similarly out then you have a gearing problem, i.e. in the OD, axle, or wheels and tyres. If only the speed is out then you could tweak the return spring on the pointer, or send it away for a rebuild. |

If the odometer reads correctly but the speedo reads fast then you need to send it to Nosinger. The internal spring after a few decades of use tends to get weak. Nosinger is amazing...but not cheap. My speedo now reads perfectly. Another option is to buy a GPS for the car. They have built in odometers and speed indicator and are extremely accurate. A great way to verify how far off your speedo is. BOB |

I think they are called Nissonger, not Nossinger |

Bart Do not forget that Caerbont Automotive Instruments Ltd makes some Smith Electronic programble speedometers more accurate than mecanical with the same look. They can easely replace mecanical. http://www.caigauge.com/index.html Greengauges makes speedos and indicators, you can design your own instrument (mecanical or electronic) on their web site. http://www.greengauges.com/ Hope it can help. |
