MG MGB Technical - Replacing Speedometer light

I'm converting to LEDs and all is well except for the speedometer. I can my hand on the light socket no matter how I contort. Is it necessary to remove the cable? Is there some trick I'm missing? Thanks.

Just persevere, or get a smaller hand. Padded dash may make it more difficult, if that is what you have. On my RHD tin-dash removing the fresh air vents makes it quite easy.

Be aware that some types of LED are significantly longer than the standard bulb and can foul the innards, I had to fabricate spacer.

Dan, I've just had a similar problem when replacing my speedo bezel. Try slackening off (but don't completely undo) the two knurled wheel nuts that secure the mounting bracket to the speedo. You may then be able to carefully twist the speedo to get enough room to get your hand in to change the bulb. I was able to move my speedo by 90 deg.

I've never removed the air vents. Any trick to that?

What type of dash? I've only done the horizontal ones on the later tin dash, but we still don't know what you have hint hint. Having said that it doesn't look like the later upright vents on the American dash would help anyway as they are probably too far over, and even the tin dash didn't get those vents until after the American dash was fitted.

Sorry!
'74 B with a padded dash. Looking at the vents I agree that they wouldn't offer much access.

I did this on a padded dash. As Paul stated persevere. Through corrosion they can stuck pretty good. You can rock it a little.

The other way which you might not like but it allows a lot of space is to remove the tach dial. Then you can get your hand in there.
