MG MGB Technical - rev meter

Hi I just bought a 1964 MGB and found the rev counter cable missing. Can anyone tell me where does the cable lead to from the rev counter. The cable is completely missing. It is a SMITHS REV COUNTER. Cable driven I believe. Thanks for any input in advance.

There should be a cable plug on the left rear of the engine block. If the engine has been changed to a later 5 main bearing engine it will not have a plug because those engines used an electric tac.

And if that is so, the tach from a '65 to '67 will replace it perfectily. Ray

Chances are what you have is the electronic tach. The factory change from the mechanical tach co-incided with the introduction of the first of the 5 bearing engines - 18GB - around October 1964. That was the changeover point for the wording on the dials as well, from 'British Jaeger' to 'Smiths'.

All this suggests you may well have the early 5 bearing motor and corresponding instruments. In which case you will neither find nor need a drive cable for the tach.

The electronic tach will work on the earlier 3-bearing engine just as well as on the later 5-bearing, and is almost certainly an easier and cheaper option if the rev counter and cable are missing.
