MG MGB Technical - Reverse Lockout
I am looking to fabricate something similar to the attached picture to ensure I do not try an select reverse on tests etc. It need to be capable of being disabled quickly, but not by accident , should I require reverse in a rush - don't ask..... The parts look familiar and my fabrication skills are low, has anyone got any idea what they are or know of something similar? Better ideas welcomed of course. Mike |

Sorry - for some reason I had all sorts of problems uploading it![]() |

Looks to be nothing more than an eye-bolt and a couple of brackets. |

B&Q is is then! Looked like some car bits to me. I will use that as my fallback - I have someone locally who might be able to make something a bit more elegant for me. I quite like this sprung version minis use

I am not sure, but Doug at MG Motorsport might make one. Colin |

Mike- Are you trying to come up with a method of preventing the selection of reverse gear while the Overdrive unit is engaged? |
Stephen Strange |
I don't think so Stephen. I think he is trying to make sure he can't hit reverse in the heat of competition when changing down in a hurry. |

Thanks, I will give MG Motorsport a ring on Monday. As you say it is to stop me selecting reverse when I am in a hurry. I had a play this afternoon, using a straight edge and if you make one as per my original picture I think you might struggle to get first and second on my box, the bar needs to be a bit left of centre. |

MIke these are 2 pics of what you need Colin ![]() ![]() |

All them pics look a bit agricultural, and time consuming if you want reverse in a hurry. I'm sure you can come up with a better looking device Shortening up the gearlever is usually enough, it makes it feel more clunky so you know where you are and also the more you shorten it the stronger the reverse blocking spring feels Actually ,you could just put a stronger spring in the reverse blocker, it's under the cap just inboard of the reversing switch on a 4 synchro box |

I agree stronger spring is probably the best but that's a gearbox out job. I think 'agricultural' wins for now - easy enough to pop on for events . |

This is the lock out (hopefully not judged too agricultural) on my MGA fitted with all syncro B overdrive gearbox. Mike ![]() ![]() |

That's the go Mike, so you can just flick it over to get reverse. Those other samples would be a real pain in a hurry---I just pictured spinning out and another car coming and going through the process of getting reverse--------ahh too late- Agricultural was a bit harsh I guess--maybe clumsy would have been a better choice of words |

Another photo showing off the car. All you need to make are basic hand tools (jigsaw, files, drill, vice etc) a bit of aluminium and a hinge. Looks neater if you find a back flap hinge that isn’t predrilled. Mike ![]() |

Thanks - Mike I like that design, might give it a go! Mike |
Mike Dixon |
Mike Ellsmore, I like that! Colin |

Here is a less agricultural design that I have had in my car since the early 90s Manufactured by a guy in Sydney I can’t remember his name It’s essentially a barrel bolt with an extended shaft with 90 degree bend You slide the bolt towards the driver (RHS) and then down locking it in place Works well and looks very neat Cheers Ian ![]() ![]() |

Ian, thanks, I like the look of that. I also like the overdrive switch as well- it's on my list of potential mods for the future. |
