MG MGB Technical - Securon Clip in Harness - BGT

I am thinking of fitting a clip in Securon 3-point harness to use on special tests but mainly as a back up to a randomly jamming inertia belt; we have just completed a regularity rally with special tests where it did/could have caused some issues - it certainly did nothing for the stress levels.

I favour the clip in type as I will probably remove it for daily use between events. We do not require or have a rollover bar and I do not really want to fit a harness bar – we use the car for leisure as well.

Has anyone fitted a 3-point clip in harness in a GT? I would rather bolt the rear point to the existing wheel arch mount, but may have to fabricate something behind the seat on the rear deck? Note the regs require the rear seat remains fitted.

It looks to me that the eye bolts will fit on all 3 existing locations?

Does your GT have wheel arch side bosses as well as top bosses?

paulh4

Yes - I had not noticed those under the carpet!

So I can drill through the boss and put a reinforcing plate inside the wheel arch? I think I can squash the rear seat squab under the eye bolt?

The alternative I thought was to drill though near the lift a dot pegs just above the rear seat squab and put a securon reinforcing plate in the boot? Straighter run for the harness?

That boss should be strong enough as is, as it was originally a seat-belt mount.

When I fitted inertia reels (or rather refitted as the PO had them bolted to the quick-release mounting points on the tonneau panel, which meant they had to be removed and replaced every time the hood was raised or lowered ...) I put them in the lower rear corner of the arch. That did need to be drilled through and a reinforcing plate put behind, and an angle bracket fitted, which was an MGOC fitting kit.

Thanks - I will have a play when the belts turn up.

Any views on using the panel above the seat squab to get the straight run? It looks substantial enough and I have reinforcing plates

Mike Dixon

Not quite sure where you mean - the heel board behind the seat?
paulh4

No I am looking at the gap between the seat back and the seat squab above the batteries so into the boot area, just under the board
Mike Dixon

Ah right, mine has bosses there as well! But only in the centre, I have used one of those plus the wheel arch boss for a lap belt for when we took our grandson out.

Probably in the wrong place for a front seat diagonal, but the concept would seem to be OK.

paulh4

yes that is what I was thinking about. Just been to see my MOT tester to run it past him and he was happy with me using that location with a bolt on strengthening plate.

At least I have it an option when the belts are delivered

Thanks for the help and advice - and photos!

Happy to help :o)

Quick one to close this off. Now fitted. I tried the mounting point in the in the boot for the rear seat lapstrap but the lateral angle was such that I could not get the shoulder straps correctly adjusted. It did not look right either.

I went for drilling and reinforcing just above the seat squab below the seat back.

If anyone does this, set aside some time for shortening the length of the single rear strap. I suspect there is a knack to doing this but it took me some time!
