MG MGB Technical - Securon Inertia Reel Seatbelts
I have just purchased a set of these to go in my GT. The latest type have a big nob on one side to adjust the positioning. Having mounted the passenger side one successfully on the wheelarch with the nob facing into the car I have started to mount the drivers side and discovered that the nob is on the same side as the passenger mechanism. Apart from looking odd the mounting bracket arrangement will need to be different so that the adjusting nob doesn't foul on the window. The supplier has confidently told me that Securon make them like this i.e. they are not handed Can anyone advise is this is the case? Thanks Nigel

Nigel; I have them on my roadster and as mentioned they aren't handed. I installed them on a GT several years ago and I recall similar problems with one being close to the window. I'm going by what I remember, I sold the car so I cannot check to verify how I solved the problem. The reels on my roadster don't work very well but I guess they are safer than using old belts, but I don't like them. Clifton

Hello Nigel, I fitted these belts to my GT about a year ago. They are as you say, not handed. I found that by carefully angling the mounting bracket the driver's side one can be mounted without touching the window. You don't need access to the adjuster anyway, just set arrow to vertical before fitting, check operation and bolt on securely. The difference in appearance between driver's and passenger sides is really not noticeable. More importantly, they are a vast improvement on my old worn belts. Clark.

Thank you folks. I have also checked with a few other suppliers and they all confirm that the mechanisms are not handed. I am surprised but at least I know! Have you mounted the strap anchorage on the lower wheel arch or the inner sill point. (Mines a GT so this may be different to the roadster) Nigel

I was replacing the belts previously fitted to the anchorage point on sill.

I've fitted these belts to both a GT and a roadster. As you say they are not handed and result in a bit of a dogleg for the drivers side mount. On my GT the lower mount in on the sill but on my roadster it in on the inside wheel arch. Incidentally I to don't like these belts at all as they don't retract very well and are fiddly to pull out. In addition they tend to lock up at awkward times so all in all they don't seem to have much going for them.

Hi Is this the only replacment option seatbelts for us GT owners? I see Moss sells a retractable set, but seems to only be for Roadsters, '73-'76? I have a '70 Gt with the orig Kangoll all over the place belt. Would like to replace them with something that is a bit more modern but do not like the reviews these are getting. Mike

I fitted these belts on my roadster 4 or 5 years ago and I am in complete agreement with Iain, they still lock up when I am trying to put them on..and passengers that aren't used to them have even more difficulty...They dont retract very well..However, I'm quite certain they will work in the case of an accident, they are much better than lap belts and so I would still recommend them to anyone.

I had problems with Securon and I fitted Kangols and they work fine. Can you turn the Knob, the Kangols have an arrow and markers on the side Knob for + or - 15 degrees

Doesn't help Nigel much (unless the belts are still in their boxes) but just to add another vote of 'no confidence' for the Securon belts - good news is that they lock up for good with very little use so you have to replace them anway. Neil

I changed Securon belts after a comment on MOT test that Kangols were worn. I find the spring tension is uncomfortable as well as their tendency to lock. I've seen an advert for rebuilding belts - I think it was by Kwikfit, can't find it at the moment but I'll try to locate it tomorrow. Vic
