MG MGB Technical - Shaft Seals for Burlen HS-4s
I have been doing some more "research" recently, this time into dust seals for Burlen HS-4 carb throttle shafts. What I have found are some small "V" seals in Viton from a company, GBSA. The photo attached shows how they simply slide over the extended portions of the shafts on both sides. In working with others on this project, I have been told, however, that they would not work on OE HS-4s as their linkage and shaft set up is just enough different to preclude their being useful for those carbs without modifications. However, for those of you who have purchased recent Burlen units, these may be of interest. When I source a supplier for our small quantities, I will let you know.

Hi Bob, How does these differ from HIF seals? It's been since I've seen HIF seals, but as I recall they're similar.... Or is my memory playing games with me? |

Rob, HIF's seals are much larger in diameter versus HS's ones. HIF body was designed with a larger shaft bearing casting so sufficient room is available to insure proper fitment of rubber seals. HIFs also include a replaceable shaft ring for refurbishment purpose Regards. |

Renou, When mention HS seals, are you referring to the ones in the new Burlen HS carbs? The originals did not use seals at all.... |

Neither did the Burlen units. The seals I show are something I have added that did not come with the Burlen HS-4s. |

Bob, is the idea to stop dirt getting in and wearing the throttle shaft or to plug air leaks? |

Yes, that is all they are for is dust and crud sealing/minimization. If they also aid in sealing air leakage, then for me, that is a bonus. I got started on this project because I noted that the front carbs throttle shafts always seemed to wear a bit more than the rears, and gathered more dirt over time. This led me to suspicion that the reason was the front carb's closer proximity to the dust laden air coming through the radiator. To stem the eventual wear caused by the accumulated dirt being sucked into thru the throttle shafts, I figured that some sort of dust seal might be worthwhile. |
