MG MGB Technical - Shift knob
Sorry for the the stupid question: '78 MGB, the original black plastic shift knob is loose and rattles. The shifter itself seems solid. I uploaded a photo of the knob with the cover off. I can't figure out what to do to tighten it and I'm afraid to screw it up. Thanks. Bob

Bob. The system is similar to the firing pin on the old Brit Lee-Enfield rifle for the firing pin--a piece of rod with a hole to fit over the shaft and two forward projecting pieces to fit into the slot on the circular nut. I made up the proper tool for use with my cars because I had the necessary machines. However, most people simply get by by using a pair of needle nosed pliers or a screw driver to engage one of the slots and turn the nut. Les |

Bob, The Chrome ferrule under the knob has two flats for a spanner, it is that which usually goes slack, just nip it up. |

Bob,, had the same issue with my 79. As Allan posted, just tighten it up from the bottom, Haven't had an issue with it since. Cheers Gary 79 MGB |
