MG MGB Technical - Shifter Length

Wonder if anyone knows why the length of the shifter lever is as long as it is in the MGB? (I have the straight on for the OD transmission)

What affect would it have if the lever were shorter?
Bruce Cunha

Bruce. Easier shifting through greater leverage. I have not tried to shorten the Mark I gearshift lever, but have shortened the two later varieties with good success. Makes for a shorter shift and I do not find the shifting any harder than with the original lever.

Les, how much did you shorten it by? Can you offer a photo?

Gents, this is mine off a 1976 Roadster. The overdrive switch is on the steering column. A previous owner had shortened the gear lever and I have had no problems with it in the last 3 years since I have had the car. Its about 6 3/4 inches long from the centre console.

Let me see if I can post a photo of two late model shifters, one factory and one shortened. It is also possible to shorten the earlier four syncro shifter and I have done so on my GT. I also make my own gear shift knobs, turned from 1.250" aluminum round stock on the lathe. By combining a shorter shifter lever with a custom made gear shift knob (which sits lower on the shifter), you can make a gear shift system that sits almost as low as those in more modern cars. But, having a relatively complete machine shop is a big plus.

Mine is just long enough to reach my hand ;-)
