MG MGB Technical - Should I be worried?

Well I think I may have run into a temporary problem with my engine build.

When I removed the cam I dont remember removing a Tachometer drive gear...That is to say a quick scour of the garage turned up empty handed so far..

Its a 72 GT.

I expect it could come in handy.

On the off chance of me not finding it or the woodruff key. Does anyone have any tips on where I can obtain one as the MGOC dont seem to have them. Or perhaps someone has one lying around they wouldnt mind donating for a small fee? If so get in touch.

Much appreciated

Heres me thinking that later 5 main engines didnt have mechanical tachometers. Am I right? In that case perhaps I havent mislaid anything - yet.

Jaimie,

There is no mechanical tacho on anything except an 18G or 18GA engine block (not on any 5 main bearing block), and every mechanical tacho is marked Jaeger, not Smiths.

When present, the drive is from the back of the block opposite the starter and there is a threaded piece bolted on to the block there for the tacho drive to screw on to.

An early cam will also have a helical gear on it for driving the tacho. My 18GA is away being rebuilt and my engine builder has said he has to make sure and get a cam which has one, so I assume most cams probably don't, but its been a long while since I had a later cam in my hand.

No they did not - I am guessing you have a new cam that is also machined to take the drive gear - they are made multipurpose now as they fit the MGA as well as the B

Thanks guys! Great information and fast.

I bought a piper and didnt really see much difference between that and the std apart from the lobes and design improvements.

All started as I was gathering a few bits in the garage for the re assembly.I double checked in a copy of Kenneth Balls workshop manual from 72 to make sure I hadnt forgotten any bits I might need. I noticed the cam mounted drive gear in the manual diagram and was a tad confused as I was certain I hadnt removed one during the strip down.

Guess I missed the part about them bieng a 3 main engine part :)

Very interesting but please put the braided oil cooler hoses on Ebay and buy yourself a decent pair of plain rubber hoses - you will be wanting to be able to see deterioration of the rubber - not have it hidden under pretty braiding unless it lets all the oil out of your nice engine!

Thanks for the kind words Chris :) I didnt see this until now, sorry for the late reply/acknowledgement.

The braided hoses, I guess they do seem pretty! I bought them mainly because of the weather conditions here thinking that -30/-40 degrees at night winter time the rubber might have better chances of withstanding accelerated deterioration or even worse split. My garage has no heating or insulation. Ill be swapping them every 3 years anyway- rubber doesnt last longer than that effectivly no matter what compound it is.

I might get some plain ones anyway as i definately dont want pretty parts on my nice engine, shiny carbs are the limit!
