MG MGB Technical - side window glass
The abandoned project continues.........I am trying to install the door glass & tracks and can't seem to get it correct. As the glass comes down, it comes out of the channel(s). Does the winder mechinism keep it in the channel? Thanks, Tom |

Maybe when it looks like it is in the channel at the top it is cocked, so when it straightens up lower down the gap is too wide. Or maybe the bottom of the channels are simply too far apart. The mechanism should just push it up and pull it down, the channels should keep it aligned in all directions. |

I wrote this last time I did it so I never have to spend a day working it out from scratch again :-). Sometimes you need to fit new linings in the channels to control the glass . |

The adventure continues......Thanks for the advice on the window. I searched the archives and found someone who mentioned that the lower rear window channel bracket can easily be put on incorrectly. When it looked right, facing forward, it is too far back to guide the glass. When I reversed it, every thing fell into place. Tthat is except it takes a gorilla to crank the handle. Thanks and regatds, Tom |

The window should go both up and down smoothly and with very little effort so still some adjusment needed here. I have always found that re-assembled right and with the guide liners in good condition you cant miss. |

There can be two causes for stiff window operation - stiff winder and stiff channels. There is quite a bit of back-lash in the wider mechanism so it is usually easy to determine which. Wind the window down, then up a bit, then pull the glass up by hand as far as you can, then use the winder in an upwards direction again. If the winder is still stiff, but the glass moved relatively easily, then the problem is in the winder. If the 2nd upward operation of the winder handle was easy until it caught up with the glass, then it is probably the channels. Of course, you could have both ... The plastic winder handles should be perfectly adequate (I've never yet broken one) but will break if the cause of stiff movement is not found and corercted. |
