MG MGB Technical - Speakers for MGB GT

Hello,
I’d be grateful for advice on the following:
I am fitting stereo speakers to my 74 GT which has been restored on a Heritage shell. In my old GT the speakers were mounted in the panel below the rear windows just behind the front seats. Beneath the rear window are two voids separated by a metal panel. I remember having to trim part of the metal panel and use spacers to get the speakers to fit (30 yrs ago). I’ve looked at several new speakers but they will all need most of the metal panel to be cut away - does anyone know how structurally important this metal panel is before I take a hacksaw to it?
Thanks
Paul

If you have to fit the speakers there then I would advise bending and shaping the metal to make room rather than cut any away.

An alternative is to make up a sterling board infill for the rear arches each side and fit the speakers in that - then you can fit some decent sized ones.

Covered in vinyl or carpet they can look quite professional.

Thanks Chris, I will try to do that in conjunction with using a spacer to minimise the alteration to the metal.

I have been using an "Ultimate Ears" unit and connecting it by Blue Tooth to my phone or iPod. I was able to put an MG logo plate where the radio was and to remove the speakers and grilles. The Ultimate Ears unit lives behind the seat or beside me on the console depending on what is playing.

The USB charger keeps it alive along with charging the phone.

In a GT I doubt that panel adds much. A PO cut some of mine away and it's never bothered me.

Speaker technology has improved a lot - you may be able to find a smaller speaker with a "long-throw" action that will still give you a great base and volume response and be able to fit in the voids.

i just had to grind a bit off to get my 5" in but for a 6" would have needed removal.
of course you could always re-position one - so cut out and weld a strip back.
