MG MGB Technical - Speedometer light out
Just bought a 1972 B. Driving last night, and noticed the speedometer light is burned out. Any idea how to change this. |

Hand up behind the speedo, clip out the bulb holder at the top of the instrument. Standard screw-in bulb is available almost anywhere. |

The photo below is of the back of a Lotus Elan speedo, but it is almost identical to the MGB one. I have arrowed the hole where the instrument lamp holder pushes in. Ignore the white wires going in there - that's because I fitted LEDs in my Elan's dials to make them easier to read at night and the wires are the feed for them. As you see the lamp holder is at the top of the instrument. Reach up behind and it pulls straight out. then you can easily change the bulb and fumble about to push it back in. there's only one wire on the bulb holder as it grounds through the instrument body. ![]() |

Thank you. Interesting Lee enough, there is no bulb back there. I knew it was a difference per domitor than what I originally was in the car, but didn't realize that there was no light in it. Guess that's my first project to work on. |

As Mike mentioned, the LEDs are great. I am very happy with this conversion. |

E10 5 5050 SMD LED make excellent replacements for the instruments, comparison attached. However with the speedo you may find you have to space it back a bit as I did or it interferes with the mechanism. The blue tinge is partly from the photographic process and partly from the original duck-egg blue paint inside the cans with the bright white LEDs. There are soft white versions which are more yellow and give a whiter result. They change the dimming characteristics of the rheostat, but can be turned off altogether. ![]() |
