MG MGB Technical - Starter jamming
Hi, Getting occasional jamming of my fairly new new gear reduction starter. Not checked anything yet but wondered if I may have used the wrong ring gear when I did a five speed conversion a while ago? Thought that changing ring and motor would be a sensible idea! Cannot tell any difference in ring gear from diagrams in my parts calalogues. John

Just like my MGB. Also new starter. The good thing is: after 2 years its over!

Hi Wim, Do you mean it stopped jamming or you got rid of the starter (or the car)? John

Just removed the starter while I was changing the oil. The ring gear has a step on the engine side, wondered if this is correct for a 66B? Bit of a pain as I'm off to the Italian lakes with the car on Friday. John

John, A '66B came with a 3-synchro transmission and "crash" starter. Its flywheel (with ring gear), starter and engine back plate were quite different from the later 4-synchro transmission equipped B's. Having no experience with a conversion to a 5-speed transmission, did you also change out your engine back plate and flywheel? Your answers might give others a clue to your problem.

Ive just bought a high torque gear reduction starter from SC parts and already its jammed. Just clicks. Put my old starter on and it works OK. Expensive piece of rubbish IMO. Mark

The earlier inertia starter flywheel is perfectly compatible with the later gear-reduction starter even though the two work from opposite sides of the ring-gear. However there are different numbers of teeth on the pinion for different applications - 4-cylinder inertia starters have 9 teeth, 4-cylinder pre-engaged starters have 10 teeth. MGC and V8 have 9 teeth. If the ring gear or flywheel has been changed then I suppose that could be wrong, even though you may have the correct number of teeth on the starter for your car year.

Thanks for the info guys, had another look through my books but still cannot tell if the stepped teeth on my ring gear are correct for the year. Or, if correct do they cause problems with the gear reduction starter. Apart from the spigot bush (and the ring gear) nothing else was changed during the 5 speed conversion. Mine came from SC as well, normally find them pretty good. John |
