MG MGB Technical - STARTER RELAY 72 MGB
Is there a generic starter control relay for a 1972 MGB. $84.00 @ MOSS is a lot of money. |

Yep. Any generic Bosch-type 40-amp relay will work. $5 to $10 at any auto store. Do the pin wiring this way: Lucas / Bosch / Color Pin# / Pin # / Code ------------------------- W1 / 86 / white/red from the ignition switch W2 / 85 / black to ground C1 / 30 / brown from starter C2 / 87 / white/brown to starter Works just like the original. |

At NAPA you can get an AR623 relay for $12 to $15. It's from a Dodge truck but works just fine, except there are no mounting tabs. The wiring is exactly as Rick explains, except on my 74 the C1/30 is power from the fuse block and Rick shows the power from the positive cable on the starter. 72 to 73 was when they changed to the sequential seat belt module, and if your car happens to have that, then look for a yellow/pink instead of white/red. Either way, the NAPA relay will work just as good and be a lot less money. Safety fast, Ken |

The following is a relay many have used. It is a generic Bosch style 30amp relay. http://www.napaonline.com/MasterPages/NOLMaster.aspx?PageId=470&LineCode=GRO&PartNumber=448405&Description=Lamp+Relay+-+Fog+%26+Driving |

Thanks to all that responded. It turned out that it was not the $85.00 relay but a defective ign switch that would not activate the solenoid. Again thanks. Sandy |

Which is why I always say "diagnose before replacing". |
