MG MGB Technical - Steering rack part missing
Hello, First of all, my English is a pure production of french school, may be some times amazing. On french MG BBS a member asked a question about lubricating steering rack, following the procedure he didn't found the yoke in place ( N° 21 in Moss catalog schema part N°17H6582 ) As the rack was functional without yoke is it critical to stay in this configuration. My personal opinion is " My life is worth much more than a new steering rack " |

C Pierre, I don't know which part the yoke is. Maybe there is a problem with the translation from French to English. On the USA on-line Moss catalog, all of the steering part numbers have 6 digits (such as 453-619) so I don't see 17H6582. Maybe you can see if the part is on this Moss web page: http://www.mossmotors.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=29018 Charley |

As far as I know the yoke is the part which is under the shimmed plate and is vital to maintaining the clearance between the rack and the pinion. If this is the correct description then it is vital that it is fitted before using the rack |

Hello CR, I had a look on the moss USA catalog. The part called "YOKE" in Moss europe catalog is the one with no number just undes N° 12. |

The thread on french BBS is evoluting. After some question our local MG Sherlock Holmes discover that the rack fited on this MG is similar to the Morris Marine Rack or is a Marina rack. ![]() |

The image in my upper message shows what is fitted on the car. Does this exist for MGB ? If not I change my question. Is it dangerous to fit a Marine rack on an MGB? Thanks by advance for all your advices, it would be a pity to lost a sympathetic member for a rack |

This is the picture from Moss UK catalog The item #21 is called YOKE, rack support and listed as NLS ![]() |

I never have understood why Moss US uses a totally different part numbering system to Moss UK who use the factory numbering system - it also seems that Moss US only numbers parts that are available from them! Anyway the yoke is necessary to keep the rack in proper contact with the rack, otherwise the unit end bushes take the thrust and accelerate wear. I can supply a used yoke if they get in touch with me. |

C Pierre, Part number 1 on your picture (part number 21 on DK's picture) look like important parts that must be included for proper operation. Charley |
