MG MGB Technical - SU Carb wear
Is replacing the butterfly valve spindle bushes a job that can be done by the competent owner or is this a job for a specialist. I replaced the spindles several years ago but it was only partially successful. |

The old spindle bushings need to be pressed out and the new ones need to be pressed in. After that, the bushings must be reamed to fit the stock throttle shaft. Without the proper equipment, the carburetors can be easily ruined. By removing the butterflies and then removing the throttle shafts for inspection, you may very well find that only the shafts need to be replaced. These are available in stock and .020" oversize. Hi Trevor, What carbs do you have? I recoed a HS2, using a kit that included teflon lined steel bushes. I was hesitant, but it all came together fairly easily. for details see http://www.mgb-stuff.org.uk/recosu.htm Herb |

I may be wrong but I think the HS carbs bushings are CAST in and cannot be pressed out - they need drilling / reaming out before the replacement bushes can be fitted. Better by far just to ream out the existing bushes and fit oversize shafts. |

Chris Nothing wrong with your memory on that! |

Sounds to me that it makes sense to do as Chris suggests. If the bushes have to be drilled out then reamed for the shaft, to ream the existing bushes for an oversize shaft. Where are these oversize shafts available from, I have checked with a couple of suppliers and they do not stock them. |

Trevor, if you are indeed unable to find a supplier of some SU parts in the UK, I'd be extremely surprised if SU Midel here in Australia couldn't assist you. They're long established, reputable, reliable and helpful. http://www.sumidel.com/index.html |

Only one place to go to for SU parts and that is Burlen Fuel Systems Ltd - if they no longer stock the oversize shaft it is probably because they do the thinwall steel teflon bushes now and they mean no issues with fittings on the shafts. |
