MG MGB Technical - SU damper keeps unscrewing!
One of the black damper caps keeps unscrewing on my GT, its just the one and the thread looks OK, it also screws in pretty tight and solid. However no matter what I do the next time I check it is always loose and has unscrewed all the way. Its only the one but I can't see anything wrong with it, anybody came across this before? |

Get a new damper. I had that same problem a number of years ago. I tried everything, including cleaning the threads and putting Locktite on the threads - no joy. I finally bit the bullet and purchased new caps and have not had any problems since. Cheers, |

A pal's did the same: replacement solved it! |

Are you using the fibre washer, often supplied with rebuild kits. DON'T. |

Can get blown off on hard acceleration as the damper cap is what is resisting the rise of the piston. Probably damaged threads, as said replace it. Metro turbos had a clip screwed to the neck of the piston cover to retain the cap. |

In the interest of science, try swapping the dampers with each other to see if the problem follows to the other carb. |

I did swop them and it follows the one cap around. It isn't loose as it will screw in very tight without issue. However the next time I open the bonnet its there laughing and loose............ |

Allan is correct. Caused by overly thick fibre washer. Get rid of it and the original threads stay put. |
