MG MGB Technical - Tinted Windshield glass

Due to a crack in my relatively new windshield I am in the need of some new glass. Apparantly Moss USA is only stocking the tinted version now due to some fit issues with the non tinted version. Can anyone comment on their likes and dislikes of the tinted glass.
Frank

Frank, I'm in the same boat, more or less. Mine passed the last inspection, but has a crack on the passenger side. My reluctance to do anything about it has to do with "dumb luck". I was at least a couple hundred feet behind an RV when a rock hit and cracked it. I suspect that once I replace it, it would be my luck to have the same thing happen within a few days. I can't comment on the glass tint preference, but have seen complete assembled windshields and frames on E-Bay several times if that's an alternative you want to explore. From what I've read on some of the threads here, it's not easy to replace the glass.

By the way, membership here is free and you should consider it so we can pick your brain (and you can pick ours too). Membership will get you into the archives and I've seen lots of detailed threads regarding windshield replacement. It's a great group and many of them are absolute masters when it comes to MGBs and give information freely and generously.

The tint is so light that you will not notice it in normal driving but it is noticeable if you look at a light coloured object partly through the screen and partly through a side window.
Chris at Octarine Services

To expand on Rick Penland's note - you may also have luck at a local salvage yard, depending on where you are. I recently had an absolute nightmare getting a windshield replaced for just the fitment reasons you describe.

My car was out of commission for almost 6 weeks while the shop where I took it tried glass after glass. I finally got a fit, but I learned my lesson. I'm now the proud owner (i.e., hoarder) of two junkyard windshields.

If you hunt around diligently you can find virtually un-tinted glass. You won’t get 100% clear because of the laminating, but you can do better than moss.
I think it is worth the effort. What ever you do don’t get glass with the heavy tinting at the top. There are a few of these floating around that no one wants, and some windscreen people will put them in unless told not to. Some one made a mistake with one batch. In an MG you are looking though the top 6 inches most of the time.

Frank;

We have one of the "tinted" ones in our C and the tinting is so light that I find the difference is not noticable when driving. As Chris says above.....only when looking throught the windsceen from outside will you notice that it is very slighly darker than the side and vent windows.

"In an MG you are looking though the top 6 inches most of the time."

And many MGs with tinted glass had the top few inches shaded as well!
