MG MGB Technical - tool source
I am looking for a source for the special tools used to install the chrome trim in the windscrren and rear window rubber on the B GT> I have seen pictures of these on installation instructions on the web, but have not found a source. I'm assuming the only source is in the UK Thanks |

No such thing exists - the only tool is for inserting the locking strip - not the alloy trim! |

Lubricate the rubber then push the trim in as much as you can, this is much easier on old rubber than new. Push it towards the screen rather than the body in case it slips out. Then it is a case of lifting the lip over the edge of the trim for the rest of the way. Whilst the tool for the locking strip probably makes it easier, even that isn't essential. |

Chris & Paul Thanks for your replies--guess Im just trying to make a hard job easier. I did try last fall using the old trim in new rubber and feared I was going to rip the rubber. I m going to get new trim and wait for a nice warm day to try again--it seems that the rubber is more pliable when warm. I've used both dish detergent and liquid hand cleaner (non-pumice) and find about equal performance --any other suggestions ? Thanks --Gil |

I replaced the windshield seal on my BGT, and it took many more hours than I like to admit. I handled it by setting aside an hour a day until it was done. The tools for this job are your own fingers and a lot of patience. Soapy water is the best lubricant. You just wish there were something to make the work easier. -G. |

We struggled with *neat* washing-up liquid, it dries too quickly. Swarfega original (the smooth green gel) was much better. I tend to think a warm day would make the rubber stickier as well as more pliable. One of the problems with new rubber is that the channels that the trim sits in can be shallower, which doesn't help. The first time a trained fitter did mine in a couple of hours using the original trim and rubber. The second time with new rubber and trim (don't ask) it took him three-quarters of a day. |

The tool that my glass man used to put in the trim on my GT is a trim installation tool. A plastic stick similar to a thicker popcicle stick. Most good auto paint dealers will have them. |

Thaks to all ! I do have a plastic stick as Bruce C describes was very useful in installing the rubber seals. The tool I was searching for and have since found at J T Handtools in the UK --its a pigtail tool that is mentioned in a few articles about installing the chrome trim into the rubber strips. I will order one and let you know if it helps or not Paul -- I could well face the same probs --ok I wont ask ___LOL Gil |
