MG MGB Technical - top speed
hello , not been on here for a while . i will give you a quick run down ,my car is well over 100 bhp at the wheels but it struggles to get up to 90mph .the cam and heads were from peter burguess but later i used some one more local for the rebuild , could the problem be caused by the cam not being fitted correctly when i had the rebuild thanks |

100 bhp at the wheels should reach approximately 120 mph. |

My car is 93 BHP at the wheels, when in Germany or om a track :-) it will easily swing the tacho needle into the orange in O/D 4th. It has a ST spoiler which makes a difference at speed but even so.... The standard car was road tested at 108 MPH so there is something very wrong with one of your neasurements, either the rolling road or the speedo must be out. Why not go to see Peter Burgess and have it tuned on his rolling road? http://www.mgcars.org.uk/peterburgess/ |

The only way the cam could be put in wrong is if the timing chain was off a tooth one way or the other. If that was the case the car should not run well if it runs at all. At what rpm does it stop pulling? |

Actually, the cam can be ground off index. The Piper cam in my 73 was 11 degrees retarded (straight up by the timing set), which caused me to advance it 1 tooth on the chain and retard it 6 degrees with the multi-index timing set to give me 2 degrees advanced. It's a good thing I dialed in the cam! Wayne |

To get to a higher speed you have to be able to sustain higher revs. If your car can't do that there must be a problem somewhere. Go back to Peter B. Goodness even a standard MGB with only about 65 bhp at the wheels can top 100 mph given enough time. |

thanks for that i will contact him thanks daren |

My stock MGBGT will do 100 without any hassle. Thats the fastest Ive had it, and granted its scary at that speed but it will do it! |

Same here, an indicated 100 plus in a standard car. Not scary though, exhilarating :o) |

Low fuel pressure ? .... will certainly hold you back. |
