MG MGB Technical - Towing Eyes

I have a MGC to which I would like to fit towing eyes to the front and rear. I have seen them attached to the bumper irons under the chrome bumpers. Any ideas where these can be purchased which would save me obtaining heavy guage steel if I was to make my own.
Bill Sharp

Bill, don't use the bumper brackets to attach towing eyes as they are just not strong enough. Cars originally had lashing brackets fitted to the bumper irons but tyey weren't meant for towing. The only way to tow a B is to take the tow rope aronnd the front axle beam. Another way is to weld a steel plate on to the centre of the front axle beam as shown in Claussager and fitted to some early cars.

MGC lashing eyes are different from MGB as they are a flat plate which bolts through the bumper iron and the front of the chassis, whereas the MGB ones are a plate folded at right angles and only bolted to the bumper irons. They would probably be OK to tow the car a short distance. The MGC does not have the same axle beam as an MGB therefore welding a plate or using it for towing is not really an option. I have some MGC towing eyes that I may be able to take a pattern from if you need. Cheers, Dave

Dave, Your suggestion of a pattern sounds great but before I accept your offer I should probably explain in more detail. I use the car for MGCC Sprints and Hillclimbs and the brackets are in case the marshalls need to drag me out of a gravel trap or similar. I run the car in the Standard Class therefore I need to retain the chrome bumpers. The bracket won't be used for road towing. If your towing eye will do the job I would be very grateful of a pattern. perhaps you could contact me direct. Regards Bill

I would appreciate a copy of the pattern also, for both my B and C.

Thanks

While the MGB ones may be lashing eyes I have used them for towing. On a B the disadvantages of the rope around the cross member are access and the rope catching and damaging the valance.

I have been away from sprinting for a couple of years but I don't remember seeing Bill in a gravel trap in the past!

Should be out again next year though with my secret weapon. RHD!

Hope to see you at Curborough in April 08 Bill.

Hi Dave, I'm still trying to avoid the gravel traps. Look forward to seeing you in 2008. Will certainly try and get to Curborough. Bill
Bill Sharp

Sorry Bill, didn't notice it was a C that you had and of course the crossmember just does not exist
