MG MGB Technical - Transmission fill issue.

Hi everybody,

I have a 71 GT that I have been restoring for the past few years. About to put the engine and OD transmission back in the car.
I note that the transmission is a top fill version likely from an older car.Problem is the 71 has no access through the floor pan. The 4 speed transmission that was in the car was also a top filler so who knows if the transmission oil was ever changed!

Does this require some surgery to the floor pan or are there other options?

Regards, Neil.

My inclination would be to do what the factory did and put a hole in the tunnel then use the factory rubber bung to close it off. It's a PITA to check the level & fill, though!

Look again. Just in front of radio console, RH top corner of tunnel. Better still, look from the bottom. AFAIK, 71 certainly and possibly all cars have the hole. No mention of the side fill box in Owner's book up to 74; my memory says sometime in RB production. Grommet shown by Moss for all to '80.

Fletcher is correct. Even the late rubber bumper cars still had the hole and plug allowing the later cars to use an earlier gearbox. The 71 was a top filler, filled through the plug where Fletcher has noted.

Thanks for your replies,

Another duh moment! I was always under the impression that the opening was on the floor pan.
The opening is where you all said it would be.

Thanks again,
Neil.

PITA to fill nonetheless... ;-)

I have found that a funnel with a length of garden hose attached about 1 foot long (30cm to you youngsters out there :)) works well for filling, I moulded mine with hot water then cooled it to 'set' a shape. I take the console out and feed the hose through the 'big' hole. Putting a loop of wire/string/something through the ring of the dipstick makes removal much easier as well. But which ever way it is a PITA as checking the level means remaving and replacing the dipstick. Have fun!

I top up my gearbox using a pump type oil can

What type of oil is everyone using ?
D DODDS

I use 20W/50 engine oil

Tests have shown that the best all around oil, for use with an overdrive equipped transmission, is 30W non-detergent oil. The easiest method that I have found for filling, is to use a funnel with a 16" flexible gooseneck attacked to it. I don't know how I lived without it. RAY

I'm quite happy with Redline in my O/D box.
