MG MGB Technical - underseal
hi all, does anybody know if some cars were undersealed in the engine bay then painted body colour from the factory as an option. regards bob. |

Never seen it. Only seen the awful mess in some engine bays, and boots, made by Zeibart. But can't paint on top of that! |

Nah. The only place I've seen it is on top of the area where the pedal box / master cyls. are mounted and even then it's more of a seam sealer that got the heavy handed treatment I sprayed an engine bay in a V8 conversion B once with body schutz and then painted it body colour -- It looked great at first but the heat in there played hell with it and it cracked like dry mud and really turned horrible real fast It's worth the effort to do it properly, rub it right back, scouring pads are good in there and spray it with 2pak matched to your body colour - goes on shiney and stays shiney - maintenance free willy They do have the small area in front of the radiator underneath the bonnet slam panel painted a mat black so that you don't see Snowberry white through the grille Some cars have a lot more black in there than others I've seen some with that whole area black and others with just a squirt up each side - depended on whodunit i guess |

hi willy, this car has been laid up for a number of years and is rock solid everywhere. sills arches floors underneath.i think it must of been restored at some time as it looks too good. the only thing that lets it down is the engine bay which looks as you said been done with black shultz then painted body colour. won't be taking engine out so for the time being it will have to stay like that but i know its going to bug me. regards bob. ![]() |

Bob I've got a mate on the big island that is an MGC guru I'll message him and see what he's got to say about it cheers |

Bob, it is possible to make a significant improvement with engine in. With things removed which can be and loom etc., masked and pushed out of the way it can be done. How easy the underseal is to remove will depend on how old it is. Old stuff is hard and scrapes, soft stuff will come off with white spirits. Brush painting is obviously easier and will look much better than what's bugging you and can later be flatted and sprayed when engine is removed in the future. |
