MG MGB Technical - V8 electronic ignition
Starting to put the engine back together and back into the car. Today I was cleaning up the distributor and thought I would check the vacuum advance. Using the tried and tested method of sucking the tube and putting my tong over the pipe to see if the vacuum remained. I was unable to create a vacuum so the unit needs to be replaced. The dissy is fitted with Lumenition electronic so I thought does the vacuum advance need to be replaced. Your thoughts greatly received |

The Luminition is a points replacement device. It does not have any effect on the basic mechanical and vacuum advance systems. If your vacuum advance can is bad, it needs to be replaced. Les |

Correct, and very expensive they are too, although the criteria for replacement is if you can suck air *from* the capsule, i.e. through the diaphragm. It may be that you simply aren't sucking hard enough. After replacing mine twice I realised the problem was fuel running down from the carb port, which is on the bottom of the throat, into the capsule and rotting the diaphragm. I constructed a small separation chamber which is mounted slightly above the carb port. Any fuel that gets as far as the chamber simply runs back to the carb, and none gets down to the capsule. Been fine ever since - http://www.mgb-stuff.org.uk/ignitiontext.htm#v8vac |

Damm you are right £64.75 from SCParts. MGOC list as NLA. Rimmer Bros list a replacement for 608194 as UKC1674 £48.95. Does any body have any experience with Rimmer Bros as I have not come across them before. |

Hi Bob - thanks for the offer, but standard is good enough for me. I'd be happy if I could get rid of the hot tapping! |
