MG MGB Technical - Valve seats

Hi all

I have the head off and looking to replace the exhaust valves which are quite badly pitted wereas the inlet valves and seats appear in a much better condition.

I have attached a picture of how they look on cylinder one. Is it likely that I will get the pitting out with grinding paste ?

Cheers Tony

Hi Tony, the head would be much better with re cut seats and last longer. Will you use an additive to run leadfree?

Thanks for the reply Peter

That was an option but now I leani g towards having them re cut.

As it is all stripped down, if I brought it to you would you need me to supply anything else?

Regards

Hi Tony, I wasn't touting for work, the last thing I would try and do on the threads, I am sure there must be able folk in Birmingham? I am happy to look over it with you anyway.

Never thought it for a minute Peter, I just really appreciate your input.

I've tried looking for places in Birmingham but havent been able to find anyone that comes recommended.

You are not that far away so I will try to get over this week, most likely Wednesday.
Tony Brough

There are loads of engine machinists around Birmingham, and particularly Dudley/Cradely Heath/Stourbridge/Halesowen. My V8 engine was 'lost' for about three months with one of them and for reasons I won't go into I didn't know who. I Googled and ended up with a list of about 20, rang round them all, and it wasn't any of them. Eventually I got it back and sent it to Roy at Dudley Engines Ltd on 07890969940 who was recommended by my paint shop. He'd just moved to Halesowen Road in Old Hill, not at other address you might find on Company records when Googling. He seems to know what he is doing and did a good job, but needed a bit of nagging.

You would be most welcome to come and see us on Wednesday Tony.

Incidentally, recommendations are not all they are cracked up to be. The place I started off with was recommended by the local club and a past customer, but after stripping the car and engine nothing happened for about four months. Then the bailiffs were called in, and one of the partners did a runner with the money from the sale of two customer cars (who themselves were past customers). I was lucky to get everything back. There is no substitute for visiting and gut-feeling.

That was sad and bad Paul. I hate people who have no respect for others. As far as I am concerned customers property is sacrosanct. I also find it difficult to recommend other folk for the same reason unless I am very confident with the way they operate.

Sounds like you were lucky indeed to get it back Paul
We get a bit of that here with what I call pop up garages that just seem to go down the gurgler overnight and start up again fresh somewhere else
They look ok on the surface-----but???
Even that new fella you used and recommended
If you had to nag him to do your job he can't be very keen
I think I'd steer clear of him as well
Surely over there somewhere there must be workshops with skills and morals to go with them like Peter obviously has
Cheers

Also - bit of thread drift-
You mentioned the Dudley area
I've been trying to contact the art museum at DudleyMall to chase up on a family matter but emails and phonecalls just won't go through
Would anyone have any idea of what's happening there, Has it closed down or if anyone has an email address would be good
I've been trying
dudleymall@dudlemall.com.uk --but without luck
Thanks

Interesting. I'd never heard of Dudley Mall, until now.

I recently visited the Black Country Living Museum in Dudley - http://www.bclm.co.uk/ - and can thoroughly recommend it.

Your email link has the 'y' missing from the @dudleYmall and also has .com.uk instead of .co.uk
could that be why you haven't heard?

Thanks Dave
I'll try with a corrected email address
I actually copied that as is-interesting
and I'll give Black County a go as well
Thankyou

Drove over to take Peter Burgess up on his offer of help today. Within a couple of minutes of getting there he re cut the exhaust valve seats, confirmed the head was in otherwise good nick and hadn't done many miles at all. He left me to lap the valves in and then one of team (sorry I didn't catch his name) skimmed the head as well.

Then I was introduced to "Peter Cox" from the TR side of the fence who happend to be visiting.

Thank you Peter and team I cant thank you enough for sharing your knowledge and experience.

Once I get the project finished I will be back for a tune up!

The current Mrs Brough waited patiently in the car and was rewarded with tea and cake in Matlock Bath on the way home.

All in all an excellent day.

"The current Mrs Brough ..."

Sounds ominous!
paulh4

Its a (Terry) Wagonism Paul, she has been current for 32 years....
