MG MGB Technical - water pipe.

hi everyone
the water pipe that goes along the top of the rocker cover to the heater has a bend or kink in it, anyone know the reason for this. just curious as it does not go around anything. it looks like it would go round oil filler cap if it was up the other end.
thanks bob.

The kink goes the wrong way for an oil filler, on the MGB at least, and on any unless the mounting brackets were reversed or the filler was in a very strange position. Quite possibly a part from the corporate bin (as so many were) and as the kink didn't cause a problem they left it as to do anything about would have cost money, but it only comes up on Google as an MGB part that I can see.

The idea for this bend was to route the excellerater cable more smouthly on early MKII cars.
I investigeted upon it as on my LHD B's there was no sense to be fond for it until I saw it on an old RHD B. Until the end of production, they never changed the tooling.

It was put in to allow the mounting of the throttle cable bracket and kick down cable on the automatic version of the car.

Interesting how many stories have currency. I thought the kink was in the pipes from Mk1 onwards and presumed it was to clear the crankcase ventilation breather unit when that pipe ran along the side of the rocker cover, just above the join with the head.

On the 18G & 18GA engines the pipe was mounted alongside the rocker arm cover and positioned further forward than it was on the versions where it was mounted atop the tover arm cover. The bend was to provide clearance for the mounting hose of the PCV valve. See page 61 of Clausager's "Original MGB".

Steve,

Nope - the top mounted pipe has a kink further back than where the PCV valve was mounted - it is definitely there to clear the auto cable bracket - I wish I had a photo to show it!

Chris gets the prize, see attached picture.

Even though the pipe is further back as Steve says in the Clausager photos there simply isn't room for a kink in the pipe, it's practically flush with the rocker cover. That pipe is a different part number to that with the kink, although interestingly the Parts Catalogue doesn't say when the pipe changed. It would be a challenge fitting a kinked pipe to a 3-bearing!

Paul,

Well done for finding a photo - I took one of an auto car some while back, but can't find it now!
